AI Penetration Testing

AI Penetration Testing

AI penetration testing uses AI agents to attack your systems the way a real attacker would - mapping, exploiting and confirming what is actually exploitable. Here is how it works, where it beats scanners and annual pentests, and how Plainsea keeps it under your control.

Definition

What Is AI Penetration Testing?

AI penetration testing is offensive security testing in which AI agents plan and run the attack. They discover your attack surface, choose techniques, chain findings into multi-step attack paths and confirm which vulnerabilities can actually be exploited - the work a human pentester does, run continuously instead of once a year.

It is not the same as a vulnerability scanner. A scanner matches versions and signatures against known issues and reports what might be vulnerable. An AI pentest reasons about what it finds, adapts when something does not work, and proves impact with evidence.

It also does not mean a model running loose on your network. In a well-built AI pentesting platform, people define the scope, the permitted actions and the intensity, and critical steps wait for human approval.

How it works

How Plainsea AI Penetration Testing Works

Plainsea runs a multi-agent system: specialised agents handle mapping, execution and analysis, and an orchestrator directs the work.

  1. Define

You set the authorised targets, the rules of engagement and the intensity. This is the safety envelope the AI cannot exceed.

  2. Discover

Agents map what is reachable - hosts, applications, APIs - including assets missing from your inventory.

  3. Reason

The AI decides what to try next based on what it has found, the way an experienced tester would.

  4. Execute

Agents run the attacks and chain findings into multi-step attack paths. Critical actions pause for human approval.

  5. Validate

Every finding is confirmed as exploitable, with evidence. Theoretical issues are filtered out before they reach your team.

  6. Report

Audit-ready reports are generated as testing runs. After you fix an issue, Plainsea retests it to prove the fix worked.

Memory carries across cycles, so each test builds on the last and only what changed needs to be tested again. Explore the full platform

AI penetration testing does not replace every human engagement. Plainsea lets you run human-led, AI-assisted or fully autonomous tests on the same platform, with the same evidence standard. See also PTaaS vs. traditional pentesting.

Safety

AI Pentesting You Stay in Control Of

  • Scope you define

Agents only touch the targets you authorise. Anything outside the scope is blocked by the platform, not left to the model.

  • Permitted actions and intensity

You decide which kinds of actions are allowed and how hard the test pushes, so production stays safe.

  • Human approval at critical steps

Before a high-impact action, the agent stops and waits for an operator to approve it.

  • Full evidence trail

Every action and finding is recorded, so you can see exactly what was done and why.

Who it is for

Who Uses AI Penetration Testing

Security teams

Know what is exploitable in your environment without waiting for the next annual pentest or hiring offensive specialists. Define the scope once; Plainsea tests continuously, confirms findings and retests after every fix. When an auditor, customer or board asks, your evidence is current.

FAQ

AI Penetration Testing FAQ

What is AI penetration testing?

Offensive security testing in which AI agents discover your attack surface, attack it, and confirm which vulnerabilities are actually exploitable, with evidence.

Is AI pentesting the same as a vulnerability scanner?

No. A scanner reports what might be vulnerable based on versions and signatures. An AI pentest attacks the target, adapts to what it finds and proves which issues can be exploited.

Can AI replace human pentesters?

Not entirely. AI covers continuous, repeatable testing at a pace people cannot match; experienced testers still matter for judgement calls and complex engagements. Plainsea supports human-led, AI-assisted and fully autonomous testing on one platform.

Is AI penetration testing safe for production systems?

With Plainsea, you define the scope, the permitted actions and the intensity before any test runs, and critical actions wait for human approval. The platform enforces those limits; the AI cannot exceed them.

How often should we run AI penetration tests?

As often as your environment changes. Plainsea can test continuously or on a schedule, and retests only what changed after a deployment or a fix.

What do we get at the end of a test?

Confirmed findings ranked by real exploitability and business impact, the evidence behind each one, and audit-ready reports you can share with your board, auditors or customers.
